Over 2 years ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show Mini teased us with a concept extreme Mini, yes it has been a long drawn out process but we are thrilled that Mini stuck to it’s guns and delivered a car not to far from it’s original promise! With just 3,000 examples worldwide and 575 cars in the UK the Mini GP is quite a rare sight on the roads making it extremely special, not only to look at but drive, this thing is bonkers!
Changes over the engine used by the JCW include a 74bhp increase, new twin-scroll turbocharger, a reinforced crankshaft with larger main bearing, lighter pistons, new connecting rods, a redesigned vibration damper, a larger sump and greater cooling potential. This mean 62mph is dealt with in 5.2 seconds and a top speed is a licence loosing 164mph! Underneath has as many, if not more tweaks than above including unique camber rates, beefed up anti-roll bars, unique 18” alloys, 10mm lowered ride height and a wider track. This all adds up to create a pure track bred monster that gives you so much confidence in the corners but yet isn’t uncomfortable on the road.
All of this is great but all these claims can’t really be used everyday so what’s it like to use daily? In one word – Exciting! Hit the starter button and it unleashes a rather addictive noise, on the move you get the odd crackle on the downshift and the ride quality is acceptable, even on our terrible roads and with it only being a 2 seater you can get loads of shopping in! Everyone’s a winner! And just look at it! It’s stunning, huge aero, carbon blade like wheel extensions that carry the cars unique build number, subtle lip spoilers and a altered rear valance with houses the centrally mounted tail pipes.
